IPL’s 15th Birthday & 15 Things Launch

In honor of the IPL’s upcoming 15^th birthday on March 17, 2010, the IPL will be launching the IPL 15 Things – introducing 15 of our favorite technologies: blogs, microblogging, wikis, social networking, virtual worlds, podcasts, videos, forums and web boards, RSS, document sharing, social tagging, reading, awareness tools, text messaging, and images/photos. For each of these technologies, we will provide background information, best practices, related readings, examples of how the IPL is using the technology, and most importantly,
hands-on exercises.

So get ready! If you complete the IPL 15 Things by April 17^th , 2010, your name will be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift card to Amazon – this way you can purchase something that will help you in your technology
development.

“Blogging,” the first of the IPL 15 Things, is being released today, September 8^th. We will broadcast the link widely. Every few weeks, additional “things” will be released with the final release scheduled for March 17^th.

‘Rename the IPL’ Contest Winners!

In 2010, the Internet Public Library (IPL) will merge with the Librarians’ Internet Index (LII) to create ipl2: Information You Can Trust. While the site will continue offering the same trusted resources and services, there will be several enhancements designed to give users greater access to the information they need, when they need it.
The name ipl2 was chosen by the IPL-LII merger team after considering hundreds of possible submissions from all over the world to the “Rename the IPL” contest. While ipl2 was not among the names submitted to the contest, there were six entries that were integral in the development and brainstorming of the chosen name. The six winners, and their entries, are: Nikki Delano (Indiana), Tom Gegeny (Connecticut), Kristi Harms (Indiana), Laurena Schultz (Pennsylvania), Trish Taylor (Queensland, Australia), and Dorothy Vance (Mississippi).
The ipl2 logo was designed by Kara Howland, graphic designer for the iSchool at Drexel University.
